Eight companies based in South Tyneside are included in the annual Top 200 list of the region’s largest companies by turnover. The list is compiled by the Journal in conjunction with accountancy firm PwC.
Despite all the challenges of the last year, the Top 200 list shows that the North East business community remains robust and highly competitive in global markets.
Hitachi Construction Machinery, based on Monkton Business Park, are listed as the 29th biggest North East company with a turnover of £247.1m, closely followed by the well-known British luxury and lifestyle brand J. Barbour and Sons with a turnover of £242.8m.
GrainCo is ranked in 54th place with an annual turnover £174.7m. GrainCo is the largest grain trading and marketing business in the North of England and Scotland, operating from the Port of Tyne who also make the list with a turnover of £48.6m.
A&P Tyne Group are ranked 94th with a turnover of £74.5m. Providing world class ship repair, conversion and fabrication services across the marine and energy sectors, A&P Tyne offers extensive storage and load-out capabilities from its base in Hebburn.
Chartered financial planning firm Fairstone operating from Boldon Business Park is ranked 116th with a turnover of £64.4m. Neighbouring businesses Immunodiagnostic Systems Holdings PLC and Maquet also make the list. IDS are a specialist in endocrinology testing, focusing on Clinical and Research Assays, and last year turned over £39.3m. Maquet turned over £37.7m with its medical supplied and equipment.
