Investing in Local People and a Local Supply Chain

Tyneside Home Improvements (THI) began trading in 2008 and was initially run from a kitchen table at a home in Jarrow by Director Kevin Kerr.

Now in its 15th year, THI has grown steadily despite challenging economic conditions, and through diversification the business has stayed relevant and competitive.

Through quality of workmanship, reputation, and recommendations, THI has established itself as one of the leading providers of home improvements in the North-East of England. Still based in Jarrow, THI, regularly competes against national businesses such as Everest Home Improvements and Anglian Home Improvements.

THI is proud to be a business based in South Tyneside, and is keen to help champion the Pledge initiative. Chris Green, Financial Controller, Tyneside Home Improvements explains:

“Since signing up to the pledge, we have ensured that, as much as possible, our supply chain and employees are local to South Tyneside.

“Two of our largest suppliers, South Tyne Building Supplies and Premier Roofs are based in South Tyneside, and we regularly buy goods and services from ITC Services, Hitachi (UK), Shaun Matthias, Stevens Signs, Timberline and Arnold Laver, to name a few!

“Whilst not the largest business in South Tyneside, our trading with local suppliers and employing staff who live in South Tyneside has a minimum annual Gross Value Added contribution of £1,300,000. That is before accounting for any employees and sub-contractors from outside of the area who work from our headquarters in Jarrow and spend locally.”

Investing in People

In 2020, THI employed 11 full time staff and 26 Sub-Contractors.

During the last year, the business has increased staff numbers to 20 full time employees to cope with and plan for continuing and future growth. This is in addition to 26 Sub-Contractors. THI currently have 5 apprentices across Business Administration, Joinery, Building and Plastering trades.

Chris Green, Financial Controller, Tyneside Home Improvements continued:

“As an organisation, we are laying solid foundations to achieve more growth, and jobs in the very near future, and we feel that it is fitting to share the story of our success and showcase what is achievable for businesses based in South Tyneside.”

Cllr Paul Dean, Lead Member for Voluntary Sector, Partnerships and Equalities, said:

“THI are a real local success story and a great asset to the borough. Connecting local people to local jobs, supporting local supply chains, and striving to procure locally, they are a fitting example of the South Tyneside Pledge in action”.
