A South Tyneside-based online retailer has expanded into new larger premises, more than tripling its floorspace and creating new jobs as the business quadruples its turnover.
EI Retail specialises in the online retail of household-name health care and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products. Rapid growth has seen the business, which was established within South Shields Business Works in 2017, outgrow the 3000 sq. ft of space it was occupying at the council managed site.
In May 2020, continued exponential increases in its online sales and the size of its team meant that the business needed to move again, fast.
The Business Investment Team at South Tyneside Council helped to source 9000 sq. ft of modern warehouse premises with offices in Garwood Street, which will enable the management team at EI Retail to consolidate the operational side of the business, house their larger team and subsequently ensure continued expansion.
Director Mark Penn said: “The business has experienced massive growth in its first four years. This year our turnover will be four times what it was last year, and we expect it to more than double again next year. With that has come a need for more space and staff.
“South Tyneside is the perfect location for an emerging technology and logistics business like ours. As well as great transport links and infrastructure, and proximity to the Port of Tyne, we have had fantastic support from the Council from day one and are fortunate to find ourselves at the heart of a vibrant and supportive business community.”
The retailer, which moved to its new premises in June, has grown its team from two to 14 staff in the last 18-months, taking on a new general manager, additional account manager, and two order pickers during COVID-19. The firm which has plans to further expand its team in South Tyneside, offers a range of staff benefits including its Training Academy, company pension contributions, private healthcare and a thirteenth cheque as standard.
Mark Penn went on to say: “We are a growing business and are actively seeking new people – we will create another six to seven more full-time roles in the next 3-4 months to accommodate our growth in sales.
“We have only just moved into these new premises and already we are looking at where we will grow to. Our plan is to develop and build our own dedicated distribution facility here in South Tyneside and become one of the largest employers in the area and a company of choice for candidates. Our current trajectory puts us on track to do that.”
Cllr Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “This is great news. We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on businesses across the North East and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate another South Tyneside success story.
“I’m pleased that the Council have been able to support EI Retail’s growth by facilitating a quick move to larger premises. We wish them every success as they continue to thrive and create more opportunities for the business and deliver more jobs within the borough during these very difficult times.”
