Last year the prestigious Freedom of the Borough was conferred to Ray Spencer MBE in recognition of his eminent service and outstanding contribution to the cultural and civic life of South Tyneside residents.
Ray has spent over 20 years promoting and championing South Tyneside’s performing arts and culture sector, raising the profile of the Borough as a visitor destination and playing a key role in multi-agency work aimed at improving the lives of people across South Tyneside.
In this Business Talk, and ahead of Ray’s forthcoming ‘retirement’ we hear about his career, his role as executive director at the Customs House and the legacy he will leave behind. Ray talks about some of highs, lows and lessons learnt along the way.
A fascinating insight into the importance of creating a sense of community ownership, and the positive impact this has had for the Customs House, particularly during darker times. Some great examples of local people giving back, supporting the Customs House in various ways, and the importance of keeping it local, keeping money in the borough, and the South Tyneside Pledge.
Don’t miss the hilarious tale behind the Customs House finally being recognised by the Arts Council, and why it’s never a good idea to mock staff at the local Health Service Staff Awards ahead of an intimate medical procedure.
Finally, see how Ray scores in Ian’s quiz all about South Tyneside!
