A contractor has been appointed for the multimillion-pound revamp of a much-loved South Tyneside cultural venue.
GMI Construction Group will deliver the refurbishment of the Customs House on South Shields’ riverside.
The appointment marks a key milestone in plans to transform the Grade II listed building into a modern, high-quality cultural destination while preserving its rich heritage.
The plans include improvements within the main building, with internal upgrades to décor and layout.
The existing café and restaurant spaces will be retained and enhanced, with the introduction of a new bar on the first floor.
The project will also include a welcoming, light-filled atrium linking buildings across Daltons Lane, as well as the refurbishment and extension of the neighbouring workshop spaces to provide more flexible areas for performances, rehearsals and community activities.
Backed by Local Regeneration Fund investment secured by South Tyneside Council in 2023, the project is a key element in the wider regeneration of South Shields town centre and riverside.

In public consultation carried out by the council in 2022, 58 per cent of respondents cited refurbishment of the Customs House as a priority to improve the Mill Dam area of the town.

Work is expected to begin on site this autumn and will take around eight months to complete.
