A South Tyneside business is celebrating national exposure after securing a significant investment on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, marking an exciting new chapter in its growth journey.
Mr Swainstons, the popular confectionery brand founded by John Gray and Sean Robinson, appeared on the hit BBC programme, where the pair sought £50,000 in exchange for a 10% stake in the business. Their ambitious pitch impressed Dragon Jenna Meek, who offered the full investment in return for 20%, reducing to 12% once her investment has been repaid.
Giving the Dragons a taste of the nostalgia, character and sweet treats that have helped build the brand’s growing reputation, the duo were determined to create an experience rather than a traditional business pitch.

Describing it as “the biggest pitch of our lives”, the team wanted the Dragons to experience the brand rather than simply hear about it. To bring their story to life, they recreated a miniature version of their sweet shop inside the Den, sharing the story, passion and vision behind the business with the panel.
The appearance marked a significant milestone for Mr Swainstons, providing the opportunity to showcase its products, brand and future ambitions to a national television audience.
While viewers saw the finished pitch on screen, a great deal of preparation was taking place behind the scenes. Anticipating increased demand following the programme, the business utilised space at South Shields Business Works to support its growth plans, all while keeping the project firmly under wraps.
Their success is a fantastic example of a local business planning ahead and preparing for growth. It also highlights the important role South Tyneside’s business centres play in providing flexible workspace and a supportive environment where businesses can innovate, expand and thrive.
Congratulations to John, Sean and everyone involved in this fantastic achievement.
