Share your Ideas for South Shields Landmark

South Tyneside Council is inviting businesses and residents to take part in a new consultation on the future of an historic landmark in South Shields.

The Council has secured government funding to potentially bring the Old Town Hall building, in the town’s marketplace, back into regular use.

The Grade I listed structure dates back more than 250 years, serving as everything from a bustling market hub and feudal courthouse, to a wartime shelter and exhibition space. The building still retains many of its original features, including its striking arches, timber turret and traditional market bell.

Local people will be asked to complete a short survey about potential future uses for the building, such as a café, a community meeting space, a pop-up area for shops or market stalls or a cultural venue used for exhibitions or performances.

The questionnaire will also ask people how important they feel it is to preserve and re-use historic buildings.

Grade I listed buildings are of exceptional architectural or historic interest and are protected, requiring special permission for any work that may affect their character. This includes demolishing, extending, or altering the building in a way that would diminish its significance.

Cllr Margaret Meling, Lead Member for Economic Growth and Transport, said:

“The Old Town Hall has stood at the heart of South Shields for generations, and we want it to continue playing a meaningful role in the life of our town.

“This consultation is about listening to residents, businesses and community groups to understand what they value and what they would like to see happen next. We have some limited government funding

“Whether people want to see more cultural activities, places to meet, support for local businesses or simply more reasons to spend time in the Market Place, we want to hear their ideas. I encourage everyone to take part.”

The consultation is being carried out by independent research agency MMC Research on behalf of South Tyneside Council. All responses are anonymous and will be used to help shape the next stage of plans for the building.

Participants also have the option to enter a £100 Love to Shop Gift Card prize draw as a thank you for taking part.

The short survey for businesses is available now and will be open until 11 March.
