A local business has demonstrated a commitment to cutting carbon since signing the South Tyneside Pledge.
Showers Pass UK engineer waterproof apparel, aimed to help people get outdoors and active no matter what the weather.
Installing LED lighting at their premises in South Shields Business Works is expected to reduce the firm’s electricity consumption by a third.
The business, which turns 25 this year, has ambitious environmental goals and is committed to making high-quality long-lasting products made from recycled materials with minimal packaging.
Launched last year, the South Tyneside Pledge aims to boost local economic activity, reduce health inequalities, cut carbon emissions and enhance civic pride for the benefit of the whole borough.
Fraser Ranson, Chief Executive Officer of Showers Pass UK said:
“Following advice on how we could improve our office energy efficiency, we decided to invest in four LED motion censored lights for our industrial unit.
“Our workspace is now brighter, less dreary and we will save on energy costs at a time when keeping overheads low is crucial.
“Staff take our environmental commitments seriously and have committed to not leaving appliances on or equipment on standby. They will also walk or cycle to work where possible.
“Being involved in the South Tyneside Pledge has given us the motivation, help and support to look internally at some of our processes and identify simple, small changes we can make which will potentially have instrumental positive outcomes.”

Cllr Margaret Meling, lead member for Economic Growth, Skills and Climate Change at South Tyneside Council, said:
“We’re delighted that Showers Pass have joined the growing number of businesses in the Borough to sign the South Tyneside Pledge.
“Changing to energy efficient lighting is a great example of one of the small actions a business can take. If every business across the borough was to do this, the collective impact would be huge.”
