Radio Shields Offers ‘Voice’ to South Tyneside Pledge Community

Broadcasting live from its state-of-the-art studios in South Shields town centre, Radio Shields prides itself on being the ‘voice’ of the community.

Formed originally as a community interest group in 2019, Radio Shields has gone from strength to strength and went live on the UK’s first small scale DAB Radio system in 2021. It now has a potential reach of over 380,000 adults from its Cleadon transmission site.

Radio Shields broadcasts full-time, showcasing details of local events, news, and activities within our local area, mixing it up with the latest music from the charts, as well as music from the past 60 years. It is now hoping the service can be used by Pledge organisations and local businesses to showcase some of the great initiatives underway across the borough.

Chief Executive Kyle Scott explains:

“As a local radio, we always shout out loud and proud about where we live. We encourage people to shop local, spend time at our fabulous restaurants and attractions and support the local community where possible. We signed the South Tyneside Pledge as a testament to this work.

“Also, like all community radio stations, we are always looking for new volunteers to help manage the station and produce programmes. We welcome people from all backgrounds and communities, regardless of previous experience or education levels to get involved. In return we can help develop skills, including broadcasting and production techniques, as well as broader skills which can transfer to the workplace or another volunteering role.

“As well as on-air roles there are also many other areas to get involved with including marketing, live events, technical, and general administration.”

Cllr Paul Dean, Lead Member for Voluntary Sector, Partnerships and Equalities, said:

“As a local radio station, Radio Shields is a natural ambassador for the borough and we’re delighted they’ve signed up to the Pledge.

“Their work and the opportunities they provide in the local community go hand in hand with the Pledge’s ethos.

“It is about local people supporting one another, contributing to their community and giving something back – and what better way to celebrate that than through a local radio station”

Pledge organisations and South Tyneside businesses can advertise on the station, with packages starting at as little as £49 per month.
