Transformative Investment Underway
South Tyneside has a strong track record of successful delivery. We have already invested heavily in growth and remain committed to doing so.
£20 million of Levelling Up Fund investment has been committed to the South Shields Riverside Transformation Package. This is the highest level of investment available within the competitively allocated fund and indicates recognition by Central Government of both the need for investment in the borough, but also South Tyneside’s opportunity for economic success and prosperity.
Riverside Transformation Package
The Riverside Transformation Package features three key developments: the Customs House and Cultural Quarter Development, the Northern Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence, and the relocation of South Tyneside college accommodation to King Street.
Investment in Customs House and the cultural quarter builds upon South Tyneside’s rich maritime heritage, enhancing civic pride, providing quality employment opportunities. The Holborn Renewable Energy Network includes a 220-sqm venue for educational visits, skills training and research around the Green Economy; these assets would further position the borough as the frontier location for the UK’s Green Industrial Revolution. Alongside the Centre for Excellence, the relocation of South Tyneside College will inject 9,000 students into the town centre, increasing the pipeline of skilled talent into the labour force.
The South Shields Town Centre Masterplan
This is an on-going programme of activity to develop the town centre over the next 10-15 years. The plan aims to create a vibrant, attractive and sustainable town where people can live, work, study and socialize; achievement of these aims will significantly address South Tyneside’s people and place constraints, cultivating an attractive environment for future growth.
The development of the New College Area, within the Masterplan, will be a hub for education and innovation, through the presence of South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School. Alongside increasing footfall to the town centre, the educational and skills resources that the area will develop will improve the pipeline of talent which will flow into the local labour market, increasing the viability for innovation by resident businesses.
