Key Subject Tuition's Claire Wardle and staff who have signed the South Tyneside Pledge

Key Subject Tuition

Key Subject Tuition are the latest company to sign up to the South Tyneside Pledge.

The company was set up just two years ago during the pandemic – initially to help those who need support in English and Maths. It has grown quickly, and its premises now covers units 10, 11 and 16 in Cookson House South Shields. With a staff of ten, it now offers even wider support including ICT, Employability, Essential Design Skills and help for English Speakers of Other Languages.

The learning experience is available in various forms from one-to-one tuition to small classes. Customers also range from private individuals keen to improve grades – to young people on South Tyneside Works study programmes.

The support from South Tyneside Council has been continuous and in many forms as Founder, Director and Maths Tutor Claire Wardle explains:

“We are very proud to be taking the South Tyneside Pledge. Everything we do is ultimately for South Tyneside, and we’re powered by local people. At its heart this is about education for all, it’s trying to upskill everybody we can reach in our community. It’s about helping people to go after opportunities and employment so you too can put something back.

“It’s also very much about working collaboratively with organisations to develop skill sets. So much of the support we have been offered from South Tyneside Council is about getting the word out and reaching new people. That has been absolutely vital.

“The growth in the two years we’ve been set up has been remarkable – but there is a clear need for what we do. We are improving people and, together, they improve this area.”

Cllr Tracey Dixon, Leader of South Tyneside Council and Chair of South Tyneside Partnership said:

“For Claire to have set up Key Subjection Tuition amidst the pandemic, when there was so much uncertainty, and to see them where they are now is remarkable. It is a personal success story but it is also a reflection of what happens when you have the energy and the dedication and the desire to help. They have built a great team and they are a very modern community business – employing locally and providing a vital local service. They are a real local asset and a fitting example of the South Tyneside Pledge in action”.

Launched in January 2022, the South Tyneside Pledge aims to boost local economic activity, reduce health inequalities, cut carbon emissions and enhance civic pride for the benefit of the whole Borough. The pledge sets out nine commitments, which are all about keeping things local, through a short report every six months.
