Curtis Instruments, a global leader in off-highway electric vehicle technology, has selected South Tyneside as the location for its newest research and development (R&D) hub, marking its fifth innovation centre worldwide.
Curtis Instruments officially opened the Stuart E. Marwell Engineering Centre, named in honor of the company’s President & CEO, who has led the organisation’s growth into a global leader in electrification over the past 40 years. The new centre is housed in the 33,000 sq. ft. former Siemens building in Hebburn, South Tyneside.
The cutting-edge facility joins the ranks of Curtis’ other global innovation centres in California, New York, Switzerland, and China. Initially, it will be home to 40 skilled engineers, with plans to create many more roles in the coming years, offering opportunities for young professionals and PhD graduates alike.
Howard Slater, Director of Engineering at Curtis Instruments UK, commented:
“I am immensely proud that Curtis Instruments UK has been chosen to establish the company’s fifth global R&D hub. Since joining in 2019 to set up the UK engineering team, we’ve grown year-on-year while working from multiple sites. This dedicated R&D facility allows us to bring our team together under one roof, boosting productivity and ensuring our role in advancing the EV technologies of the future.”
Curtis selected South Tyneside for its skilled workforce, excellent transport links, and proximity to five top-tier universities.
“The North East of England already boasts a robust cluster of advanced engineering firms pioneering electric vehicle technology,” added Slater. “This provides access to skilled professionals and established supply chains. The location also supports our ability to attract top talent, drawing from graduates from universities like Newcastle, Durham, Northumbria, Sunderland, and Teesside. The high quality of life and excellent transport infrastructure make South Tyneside the perfect choice for this significant investment.”
Cllr Margaret Meling, cabinet member for economic growth and transport at South Tyneside Council was shown around the new R&D hub and expressed her excitement at the opening:
“We are delighted that Curtis Instruments has chosen Hebburn for its fifth global R&D hub. The fact that they selected South Tyneside over other locations around the world highlights the strong business environment we offer. We look forward to working closely with the Curtis team as they continue to grow and innovate.”
