200 organisations have now signed up to the South Tyneside Pledge and are making a real difference across the borough!
Pledgees have helped create over new 50 apprenticeships across the borough, increased the amount of spend with local suppliers, delivered talks in schools and provided work experience placements, launched innovative community initiatives and schemes for carers, and got involved in volunteering, A Better U and the fight against climate change.
Launched in January 2022, the Pledge sets out nine commitments around encouraging organisations to spend, recruit and procure locally. It aims to boost local economic activity, reduce health inequalities, cut carbon emissions, and enhance civic pride.
Pledgees are really making a difference by honouring their commitments.
There have been great examples of businesses supporting the community, such as local charity Emmaus launching a community launderette to help people with the rising cost of living, and energy consultancy Tritility supporting the Council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme.
Use of local suppliers has also increased among pledgees, with over 20 Pledgees using more local companies and 15 Pledgees winning more local contracts. Businesses are also collaborating for mutual benefit. Many organisations are also taking action on climate change and taking measures to reduce their carbon footprint such as converting to LED lighting, installing solar panels and introducing an electric car scheme.
